Day dreaming

Spring arrives at SandburneSandburne has enjoyed its first guests with folk from Warrington, London, Tadcaster, Newark and New Mills amongst those who have passed through its doors. The glorious sunny weather over Easter encouraged many to come and see the last of the winter clad tops, soon followed by Festival season. The Jazz and Mountain festivals brought an excited buzz to the streets of the town and the many action packed activities over the Mountain weekend especially, fair took one's breath away. Meanwhile the bluebells forget-me-nots, wild garlic and azaleas have enjoyed the sunshine of the last few days and the watering of nature at night to produce a profusion of Spring colour in the garden. It's an exceptional time of the year....do come and enjoy it with us. I look forward to seeing you......

Sandburne – a little family history….

Whenever I go away, it’s always good to know something of the people of the place in which I stay. So here’s a little information to begin…… Sandburne came into the Watson family in 1951 on moving here from Leicester when Donald took up the position of Woodwork teacher at Lairthwaite School, then the first Secondary Modern School in the country. His wife Dorothy was Headmistress at Mungrisedale School until it closed. Donald continued involvement in the local vegetarian society but handed over the running of the Vegan Society as it was becoming too big to handle alongside his teaching commitments. The fells became the family’s playground and the walled kitchen garden kept them supplied with year round vegetables. When Don retired from teaching, he took up guided walks, often taking groups of 30 or more onto the fells. Their daughter Jan, my wife, retired from her profession to help her parents maintain Sandburne and began our involvement with the hospitality business in running the cottage next door as a self-catering property.

So now Sandburne is about to embark on an exciting new chapter in its life….. and I welcome all to enjoy an inviting home from home experience after an invigorating day amongst the lakes and fells.
